USDA Announces $980 Million in Rural Utility Development Loans

Earlier this month the USDA announced some $980 million in loans to be used for the development of 3,587 miles of line benefiting 17,000 residential and business customers. As the article states, these investments “will ensure that rural electric infrastructure will continue to meet the electricity needs of rural residents, farmers, and commercial and industrial customers”.

Present in the recipient purpose are many smart grid projects. This is a significant investment in critical design enhancements for rural communities. The Obama administration has shown considerable interest in the improvement of existing grid technologies and modernization efforts.
